Shock Waves in a Model Particulate Composite

Abstract

Propagation of shock waves in heterogeneous media is examined. A model particulate composite is proposed, consisting of silica glass spheres (100–200 μm diameter) embedded in a poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) matrix. Various volume fractions and particle sizes will be examined to determine and optimum configuration for dissipation of energy as the shock passes through the sample thickness. Composite fabrication techniques are discussed and an experimental and modeling approach is proposed.
