The TAU Lepton and its Neutrino

Abstract

The τ lepton has been studied extensively since its discovery in 1975 (1), in the process e+e- → τ+τ- → e±µ∓ missing energy. It is the heaviest known lepton, and the only one that includes hadrons in its decay products. In the Standard Model, the τ and its associated neutrino form a weak doublet and belong to the third and perhaps last family of leptons and quarks.
