Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy

Abstract

The use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in chemical research is spreading rapidly. Unfortunately, the cost and complexity of NMR spectrometers have largely precluded their use in undergraduate training. It is the purpose of this article to present the elements of NMR spectroscopy in a form which should be suitable for presentation to undergraduates and provide an introduction to more advanced treatments. Emphasis will be on absorption by ^1H and ^(19)F since these nuclei have so far been of the greatest importance in organic research. The discussion will be more illustrative than comprehensive.
