Abstract

The structural, electronic, optical, and electrical properties of semiconductors are treated within a common framework. The bonding in the lattice determines the band structure of the solid, which is used to describe the chemical, optical, and electrical properties of the semiconductor. These concepts enable this process to be understood from a qualitative, chemically based viewpoint.
