Abstract

John Gurdon taught us that the beginning of life is never truly lost — only waiting to be reawakened. Long before his ideas were accepted and celebrated, he showed that a cell remembers more than it appears to know: that within a differentiated nucleus lies the latent capacity to begin anew. This insight, pursued with patience and extraordinary experimental care, would ultimately reshape the field of developmental biology. John’s approach to science arose from a lifelong curiosity about how life organizes itself, renews itself and surprises us. And, to those who knew John well, his science was inseparable from his character — gentle, persistent, quietly radical.
