Part IV. Clupeoid Fishes from the California Miocene

A well-preserved fossil fish, evidently the first true Clupea known from the Miocene of California, has been found near Los Angeles. Though known only from the unique type, this good-sized specimen justifies a description. To appreciate clearly the distinguishing characters of the new form, it is necessary first to give a redescription of Xyne grex Jordan and Gilbert. Xyne is the most abundant fish of the Monterey formation and is closely related to Clupea.
