On the effects of aid to nations in arms races: The Richardson model

Abstract
The arms race literature in political science has dwelt heavily (indeed almost doted) upon the pioneering work of Lewis Richardson. Richardson's principal contribution was twofold: (a) to characterize an arms race as a set of linear differential equations and (b) to produce behaviorally plausible interpretations of the parameters in the model.
