An Indanyl Precursor to a Chiral Spiro Compound

Abstract
The dimer of α-indanylcarbene obtained after UV irradiation of the lithium salt of the tosylhydrazone of 1-indanone in benzene is trans-α,α'-dehydrobiindanyl, (C_9H_8)_2. The asymmetric unit is planar within ±0.02 Å; the two halves are related by a center of symmetry and joined by a double bond.
