Abstract

In a recent paper 1) Gutenberg tried to show, that in general the height at which the temperature of the stratosphere begins to increase more rapidly, is greater in summer than in winter. As there are very many effects due to unavoidable errors, especially the effect of the wind at heights above 10 km., in general unknown, a simple method has been used by Gutenberg to calculate the results within the limits caused by the errors. F. J. W. Whipple 2) now raises some objections to this method. As has been pointed out by Whipple (p. 159) Gutenberg calculates the sine of the angle of incidence as a function of the distance measured at the base of the stratosphere.
