Volcanic Origin of the Eruptive Plumes on Io

Abstract

A quadruple long exposure of lo in eclipse exhibits faint auroral emission from the eruptive plumes. No luminous spots in the vents, predicted by Gold, were observed. Heat from the interior of lo appears to be the predominant source of energy in the plumes.
